Campovarayoq, the Ancient Guardians

Dominated by terraced fields and two sacred temples atop two heights, the island of Amantani, one of many dotting Lake Titicaca, is a veritable stronghold of Quechua traditions and spirituality.

The island remains under the protection and management of a small community of farmers who play a vital role in preserving the island’s fascinating agricultural traditions, with one of the oldest being the ancient Campovarayoq, a name indicating the “guardians of the fields” and the stone terraces. They are responsible for safeguarding and maintaining the four quarters in which Amantani is divided.

These four pieces of land mirror the structure of the ancient Andean empire, known as Tahuantinsuyu, which translates to “the reign of the four quarters” in Quechua. This division enables the community to effectively manage farmland, with each quarter planted with a specific crop on a rotational basis each year. Additionally, one quarter is left fallow for rest, while the animals are grazed there to enrich the soil.

Amantani Rooting Experience (4D/3N)

Day 1 FIRST QUARTER / Ancient Rituals

Your rooting experience in Amantani starts with an introduction to the ancient rituals and ceremonies that are practiced by the local community since time immemorial to honour and connect with the Mother Earth (Pachamama) and the other forces of Nature.
Day 2 SECOND QUARTER / Campovarayoq

Meeting a Campovarayoq will provide the deepest connection to the ancient traditions of the island: as the designated guardians of the farmland, they work tirelessly to protect and nurture the terraced fields and the crops, and make regular offerings to show their gratitude and reverence to the Mother Earth.
Day 3 THIRD QUARTER / Sacred Plants

Our journey to the roots of Andean culture cannot be separated from a day dedicated to sacred and medicinal herbs. Get ready for an exciting sensory experience, immersed in the colours and scents of muña, huacatay, cilantro... and the ancient stories that each of these plants tell.
Day 4 FOURTH QUARTER / Primordial Waters

In this final experience, we will delve into the mythology and beliefs that still bind the inhabitants of Amantani to the sacred waters of Lake Titicaca, eternal source of life and protection of the gods. As we approach again the mainland and our journey back in time rewinds, take the time to savour the feeling of peace and interconnectedness that these waters provide.
